In a year full of uncertainty, baseball is FINALLY back! Of course, with baseball being back, means commemoratives are back. I will go out and say immediately that there are big question marks concerning commemoratives for this season, and I have absolutely zero confirmation of anything being used past this 2020 Opening Day baseball.
We’re just going to have to sit back, and watch what happens, and I assure you at first whisper of anything being used, I will let all of you know.
Meanwhile, baseball begun this week, and the 2020 Opening Day commem was used! Here’s a good look at one:

But of course, as with everything 2020, there is a snag. It appears not every team used these balls for Opening Day. Here’s a photo of a baseball the Mets used on Friday for Opening Day:

I am trying to figure out exactly which teams did not, if any others beside the Mets. Either way, this tells me MLB is clearly not being too strict with things similar to this in 2020. Home openers as usual, mostly used the Opening Day commemorative as well. But once again, not everyone, the Tigers did not use them.
I’ve reached out to the Mets for comment, but have not received one as of publishing this post. I will update as always with any developments if they come forward.
The best part about this to me is I know the Mets had the balls at some point, one was thrown to a fan at the Mets alternate “Summer Camp” site at MCU Park in Coney Island. Will I ever find out the real story? Probably not. You can find these baseballs on eBay, here.
As always, stay tuned to the site for all updates on what’s used this season, and more. You can follow me on twitter @thefrownyface, on Instagram @ericabneri, and those are two great ways to reach out if you have any questions, comments, or want to share something. Thanks for reading!
